Typical target audience for my soap opera

Swords, Sandals and Gladiators
The typical person who will be viewing my soap opera will be a woman who is 25 years old, she has a child that is 4 years old, the child’s bed time is 8pm which is when the mother can relax and watch programs unsuitable for minors. They live in an urban area which is peaceful and grassy; it is not so built up like a city. She works as a secretary for a business that sells properties abroad.
Her job starts at 9am and she finishes at 5pm, when she comes home the child’s carer baby sitter leaves and the mother begins cooking food, cleaning and doing other jobs around the house. After 8pm and the child is in bed the mother then sits down and spends time to her self after a long day.
Her interests include shopping, reading books, watching TV and playing piano. Her spending power is slightly above average with her husband bring home an income of 25k a year and herself 20k. Other interest involving media include using the WII fit and doing fitness training, she also enjoys using her DS to play Mario games and do brain training. She also uses Facebook to keep in touch with family and old friends.

Hollyoaks Analysis

Hollyoaks

Narratives: Each episode in a soap opera leaves the viewers with a cliff hanger, in this episode the cliff hanger was the old mans reaction to finding out his girlfriend he was about to marry only him for his money, this will create gossip in the papers about what will happen next, they use the shot reverse shot effect when having discussions to show the reaction from both characters. The time in this show is mostly morning to afternoon, it didn’t have a night scene, this makes the show seem a lot brighter and happy.

Realism: this show is full of glamorous models, some not so glamorous but the majority of girls are seen as attractive, it doesn’t represent realism well, there isn’t a large mixture of race, most of them are of a white ethnic background. Visually the camera angles are shot in a way to make it very movie like, for example, Stephanie who has cancer was going through nausea and it showed this using camera tricks with blur effects, this was more of a first person view which kind of stole away the feel of realism compared too seeing the effects from the outside.

Audience: The audience this show is looking to attract are mostly young people aging from 16-25, this is why they took the glamorous approach to the characters, it also has humour which attracts the younger audience, A lot of gossiping and referring to the past was done in order to show what was going on, for example, the mother was referring back to when she saved the old persons life, admitting that it wasn’t her daughter that saved his life, and they were only planning on getting the old mans money by marriage, this helped inform new comers to the situation.

Representation: This soap opera represents all teens as being glamorous, this attracts young attention as some may imitate the fashion sense, there a not so many people from a black ethnicity in hollyoaks, and this is most probably due to the area in which they are situated, gossip is also popular between the younger generation and doing this helps benefit the soap opera inside and outside of the soap, in the media.
